Rest Does a Body Good

Do you know what is the most amazing thing in the world? Five days of not stepping in a gym, picking up a bar, thinking about technique or tearing your hands. Don’t get me wrong. I love the gym. I would live in the gym and play all day if I didn’t have a life outside CrossFit (which I do and everyone should). However, my vacation could not have come at a better time. Four competitions in the last three months (two competitions within the six days) and a couple of months of really challenging programming did me in. I. Needed. Rest. I didn’t worry too much about food. I drank a bunch of hot chocolate. It was heaven.

Today I feel rejuvenated and ready to go. More than anything, I’m excited. I can’t wait to pick up the bar. I can’t wait to lift heavy. I can’t wait to nail down some more skills. I’m excited to get in the gym and coach. I’m a new person. Mountain air will do that for you.

When is the last time you gave your body and mind a good, healthy break? Now might be the right time!

This morning there was no easing back into working out. Drew Hymer and I did a super tough WOD from The Great Lakes Invitational. Five rounds for time of 12 Bench Press (165/85#), 6 Squat Snatch (135/95#) and rope climbs (3/2). All I’m going to say is my rope climbs need serious work. Holy forearm smoker! Add it to the to do list.

Tonight it is band back squatting and some other fun challenges. Muhahaha.

Starting today I’m rearranging my week. Monday and Friday are now rest days. This gives me a full weekend to get in some quality work. Not more work, but more quality work. Big difference. My goal is to stay healthy. I don’t need to overtrain, just train smart. It is really easy to get rushed during the week with my busy schedule. Certain things I need to be giving more attention get neglected. I’m not sure why I didn’t make this transition before.

Lastly, I’m on a mission to change the way I sleep. I’m a tummy sleeper. Awful, I know. It has been giving my SI joints fits. I’m trying to “learn” to sleep on my back. Here is an interesting article giving the breakdown of different sleep positions and the pros and cons. Informative!

P.S. I finally registered for The Open. So did Bob Harper. Very cool.
